When he stepped foot in Misamis now Ozamiz City, after crossing Panguil Bay via Kolambugan, Lanao del Norte, he took off his T-shirt and with a stick planted it as a banner in a place he called “Katadman” which in Maranao language means “Remembrance”. He then proceeded to Aloran where he met a woman who captured his adventurous heart. Watamama then assumed a Christian name “Juan Tamaktamak Mutia” and proposed marriage to this Christian Woman.

Amidst the vehemence of the woman’s family and driven by the deep love for each other; the first Christian and Muslim intermarriage happened after the couple eloped to a small interior Barangay in Zamboanga del Norte in order to escape the wrath of the family. They raised many children. The small barangay was named Mutia and which is now existing as the Municipality of Mutia, Zamboanga del Norte.

Since the family roots of the wife Juan Tamaktamak Mutia were in Bohol, they returned to Bohol every year for an Annual Reunion, a tradition which the Boholanos has treasured even up to the present during their annual town fiestas.

Since Juan Tamaktamak Mutia was already known in Bohol and was considered a part of the family, there were times when he traveled alone to Bohol and Cebu and even to Luzon doing his buy and sell trade for his family’s basic needs and education while the wife was left to tend their many children.

Truly the description of this man was “In every port a woman” which explains why there are Christian and Muslim families bearing MUTIA as their family name.
